The Orleans County Genealogical Society hosted an educational event Saturday, April
17th, 2004, on board the train out of the Medina Railroad Museum, 530 West Ave., Medina, NY.
We saluted the great many orphans that were taken to rural areas of the United States in the
hope they would be taken in by good people.
Some of their stories were amazing, some heart breaking. Some of these children came to
our own Orleans county and we are rounded up some of those still living in the Orleans County
area to join us and share their memories. We had an onboard speaker- there was a public
address system in each car. The trip was a 34-mile ride and took two hours. We took a leisurely
ride through the scenic Erie Canal Heritage Corridor aboard vintage 1947 Budd passenger cars.
The train departed the station at 11 AM. A second train ran at 2 PM.
This is a most interesting topic. I have met with one local woman who arrived in Medina as a
rider in 1928. Despite her trials she has been able to trace her genealogy back into the 1700s
and sets a good example for the rest of us!
It was our pleasure to sponsor this event to salute the Orphan Train Riders!
